Ann Blitz charged with assault in Port Jervis, trial in absence. fined $100 and to stand committed until paid. Charles Conkling indicted third degree for Barryville case. jury deadlocked, retrial led to guilty verdict and three years hard labor at Sing Sing. Hosea Hammond Sr. indicted for striking Street Commissioner Miller in Port Jervis. found guilty and fined $25.
Maj. Sproat announces James L. Stewart has not been removed nor will he be from the U S Assessor of Internal Revenue post. Stewart returned to Monticello after a two week absence, during which a stay of proceedings may have halted ouster efforts, counterbalancing the move to remove him.
Port Jervis reports immense Erie Railroad freight flow last month with 14,000 loaded cars passing east and west on Tuesday. Officials expect around 20,000 to pass today as lines remain blocked with cars.
The Saturday storm dampened Christmas cheer but did not dim the day’s joy. Grace Episcopal Church and Empire Hall hosted services and the Congregational benefit fair while Mulberry Street hosted lively Sabbath School entertainments with Santa, gifts, and readings. The County of Orange mourns the death of William Graham Esq who died at his Greenville residence on Sunday evening December 24 at age 81. He served as Justice of the Peace in Minisink, sat on the Supervisors, and for twenty years was Commissioner of Deeds. He helped found Middletown National Bank with Hon. Joseph Davis and was father to Hon. William M. Graham and Richard Graham. He was a longtime elder of the Centreville Presbyterian Church.
Six year old Lillie Glasier daughter of a widow died after flames engulfed her clothing while she played alone. A bull dog owned by Mr Van Etten tore at the blaze and may have saved her life by removing burning garments, but the mother Mrs Glazier was severely burned trying to rescue her child and lies in critical condition.
James C Terbell of Walden claims Ah Sin for his roan gelding eight years old by St Lawrence and Belle Mahone for his brown mare by Rysdyk Hambletonian. Jonas LeFever of Middletown names Mary T a bay filly about four years old by Middletown dam Blue Warrior. Daniel Shuart of Little Britain near Newburgh sold two unbroken colts for nine hundred dollars sired by Alden Goldsmiths Volunteerdam Star mare.
Mr Brown, proprietor of the Monhagan Ice pond, began harvesting last Friday and Saturday. Rain forced a halt after about half filling the ice house. The ice reached ten inches thick and was crystal clear, so transparent one could read the Evening Press through the blocks as if through plate glass.
