Mr J T Cockayne chief engineer of the Middle town fire department bought a costly meerschaum pipe in Liverpool on a trip to England. The pipe was stolen in England but later recovered by a relative who found it in a John Bull’s mouth and repurchased it for a trifling sum. The incident is seen as a good omen.
