G Emmet Crawford of Newburgh and Port Jervis advertises elastic stockings anklets and wristlets made to order from new stock. He offers measurements and individual cases with lower prices than New York specialists. Abdominal supporters obesity belts and truss fittings are available with a large stock and prompt attention.
A lightning strike Sunday night burned Beakes farm near the city, destroying barns granary wagon house ice house and a large amount of hay. Augustus Gregory narrowly escaped injury as he aided in saving horses and other assets. Six horses forty eight cows and various tools were removed before flames spread. insurance on the property totaled several thousand dollars.
David Warner, a colored man, was charged with assault in the second degree after slashing Sidney Brown with a razor. Police say Brown had a troubled past and Warner hired lawyer G W Powers. The incident, near Mrs Daly's place on Fulton Street, has two conflicting sides.
An Erie and Western engineer risked his life Saturday evening to save a child playing on the track. He leapt from the engine onto the footboard, pulled the child to safety, and sprang clear before the locomotive reached them. Later, a community gathering at a lodge and various local events are noted, including wheelmen movements, church activities, and a Sullivan County Express travel report.
An Italian immigrant on the mine’s jump crew in this city tried to board a moving freight train at the Innes street crossing. He tripped, the wheels crushed both legs, and he died at Thrall Hospital after amputation. witnesses described the fatal attempt and a prior similar stunt days earlier. Coroner to hold inquest. the victim named Amelio Costomo, 3,608, from Brooklyn.
Midway Park opens for the season on Decoration Day with two shows daily and a band concert by the Separate Company Band. Sloward Starrett performs for children with Pouch and Judy, ventriloquism by America’s representative ventriloquist, Burden and Burden, gymnasts and singers, Miss Lottie Carr with illustrated songs, and Vanamee lectures on eighteenth century English literature. Clemson licenses nine dogs and pointers totaling 1590 dollars. Prisoners George Stewart and Giuseppe Sigismonti are sent to Sing Sing.
The Water Board unanimously approved building a filtration plant at Montagen Lake to be ready in ninety days. The Continental Filter Company of New York will construct the plant, with payments to be made from current income. The board also authorized a contract draft and set a completion deadline, avoiding new taxpayer costs.
Veterans from Gen Loa Post and the Panga Veterans attended a service at First Presbyterian Church Sunday night. Rev David Winters led opening prayer with Chaplain Winchester and a patriotic address followed, praised by many attendees as inspiring and stirring. The congregation sang My Country Tis of Thee and a quartet performed, while flowers, flags, and draped colors decorated the platform.
A group of well known Germans enjoyed a farewell outing at Meenerchor Park on Sunday afternoon. The event was arranged by Adolf Seibreter, baker, Brasa's Brothers. William J. Mutt, cake baker. and Hubert Weingertner, silk weaver. The party plans to sail to Germany on the Hamburg line for a three month visit with friends.
An eighty four year old farmer John M Talmadge of Wawayanda weds his housekeeper Anand obrier age forty on Saturday night with only witnesses William and Nelle Frien siblings of the bride. The ceremony performed by Rev Theron Brittian of Ridgebury.
Obituary notices report the death of Katie Kelaher, 32, daughter of Catherine and the late Patrick Kelaher, at her Montgomery home. Capt. Fred Decker of the Tenth Legion 56th XYV died suddenly near Newburgh, with funeral details to follow. Mrs Sarah Wilkin Coleman, wife of ex-Burrough Roswell Coleman, dies in Newburgh, leaving many children and a long list of survivors. Mrs Cornelia Lawrence dies at 75 in Crawford, with a long lineage and nine children. A thunderstorm and hail disrupted the area, damaging lines and lights at Midway Park briefly. a fire near the city is noted.
