A farmhand William Pouch killed Alexander Harris and his wife and fatally wounded a hired girl at Harris’s farmhouse five miles south of Waukesha. He then shot the hired man, breakfasted, and escaped on a bicycle, pursued by a lynch-minded posse heading toward Burlington. Authorities deem him possibly insane or hiding another crime. Mrs Harris may survive.
In the chamber of deputies minister Count Guicciardini explained Dingrey bill clauses affecting the Malian trade especially oranges and lemons. He noted Baron Fava, the Italian ambassador in Washington, continues negotiations for maximum concessions. Senor Picardi praised Fava’s activity and urged persistent protection of Italian interests toward a potential commercial arrangement if new tariffs are enacted.
In Amesbury Massachusetts Dr Cooper secretary of the board of health reports a remarkable fatality. On Wednesday night the 4 year old son of Napoleon Namel died from a blow believed to cause brain concussion after he and his 2 year old brother seized an ax in their father’s yard. The younger boy picked up the ax and struck the elder on the head during play.
Police ejected Kloyt H. Freeman from the fire marshal's quarters in Syracuse after he resisted Mayor McGuire. Freeman says the action was expected and carried out on the mayor's orders.
Destruction occurred during a heavy wind at Ballston Spa 2,000 cords of a spruce pulp wood owned by ex-Con Freshman George West ignited, with over 500 cords burned. A force of 108 men fought the blaze.
News from Paris reports the Duc d Aumale died in Zucco Sicily at 75 after learning of the Duchess d Alencon s death in the Paris charity bazaar fire He was born January 16 1822 in Paris and pursued a lengthy military and political career including Algeria governorship and French academy membership He died from shock tied to the Duchess fate and was connected to the Orleans royal family exile and later return to France
Russell Sage denies a break with George Gould and Mills as reports swirl. In New York Mrs John Morgan saved husband and children from a fatal fire. A Brooklyn verdict of 390.69 favored former housekeeper against J E Searles of the sugar trust. Paris bazaar fire casualties buried. Rector Henry Mottet had G Weinberg arrested after a duel threat. Fireman John Rheinhardt died from smoke in a Chambers Street blaze. many firefighters affected.
In Chicago on May 8 President Charles W. Spalding of Globe Savings bank faced 29 indictments mostly for embezzlement. He pled not guilty to all charges and was returned to county jail. Bondsmen searches continue for $300,000.
Robert A. Martin formerly treasurer of Columbian University was arrested and arraigned in police court on charges of embezzling $20,850. The complaint was filed by President Whitman and Trustees Woodward and Green. Martin was released on $5,000 bond.
Wheat moved with mixed sentiment as No 2 red opened easier then rallied on foreign buying. May 78 1/4, July 76 1/4 to 77 1/16. Rye steady, corn weak early, oats quiet, pork steady, lard and butter quiet. Cheese varied with state small gains. Turpentine firm, molasses steady, rice steady, hogs and hay mixed across markets.
Thomas H. Stout, a six year fugitive and forger, surrendered to the District Attorney in New York after an extensive run of indictments for forgery in the second degree. Once a Kennett Hopkins & Co. confidential man, his thefts totaling around 20,000 pounds led to civil suits with Holland Trust Co. and forged endorsements on cashier’s and other checks. Stout arrived in New York from Boston, accompanied by his lawyer and son, and was held on a 10,000 dollar bail. The case cites five indictments for forged endorsements and signatures dating from 1891.
Miners in Tellico and Knoxville report they will work under the wage reduction. Other districts already accepted and began work. With summer coal shipments light, miners face hardship and expect conference Monday to settle differences.
A wagon carrying William Taber his 10 year old son and his mother in law Mrs Mary Johnson was struck by a Chester Valley railroad train at a crossing about a mile from Norristown. Mrs Johnson died from injuries and Taber and his son sustained skull fractures and were in precarious condition. The wagon was demolished though the horses were unharmed.
In Indianapolis on May 8 laborer Christopher Nichols attacked his separated wife then fled to Nagle creek banks. He took poison and died after a three hour pursuit. Mrs Nichols sustained serious injuries but is expected to recover.
Jamesa Broman, who claims to be from White Plains, was arrested in Hudson for passing a worthless $13.50 check drawn on Weatheraster County National Bank. The check was cashed by a boarding house keeper where Broman stayed one day.
An article from Reading Pennsylvania notes that Anthracite blast furnace No. 3 of Brooke Iron at Birdsboro has shut down due to weak iron demand. The plant’s weekly capacity is about zero tons and the idle period is described as indefinite.
Dan's Review for the past week reports April sales in eastern loading houses near 10 percent below 1892 but 6.1 percent above last year, based on 357 reports from 14 cities.
