John Forster a 42 year old Hoboken N J carpenter was found dead in his house with a rope attached to a ceiling hook indicating death by own action. He left three children.
Pratt, once Susquehanna division superintendent and later Erie railway general manager from 1864 to 1878, died in Elmira at age 76. The obituary notes his long service with the Erie line and marks his passing in May.
James Murtaugh of Oswego New York was instantly killed May 5 when struck by the New York Express on the New York Ontario and Western railroad at Fulton. The fatal accident occurred as he was near the tracks and the incident is under railroad investigation.
Washington May 1 The Dingley tax bill as amended by the senate finance committee was presented by Senator Aldrich Rhode Island for consideration on May 18. The bill shows deep reductions and drops the retroactive clause and Hawaiian treaty abrogation. Beer tax rises to 44 cents a barrel until 1900 then 31 cents. Sugar and wool schedules revised with new duties and ad valorem rates. Fish enters free list and various duties adjusted on lead ore watches clocks jewelry pine lumber tobacco and cigars.

Joseph Thorne, inventor of the Thorne trapsetting and distributing machine, died at Sing Sing from Bright's disease at 72. Born in Marlborough Ulster County he served in the Mexican War and became an engineer. He later worked as second engineer of the Arctic and was briefly with Howe and the Singer company, including a factory stint in Scotland.
