The president announced cabinet appointments naming Richard Olney as secretary of state and Judson Harmon of Cincinnati as attorney general. Harmon, a longtime judge and prominent Western lawyer, received strong support from Ex-Governor Campbell and ex-Governor Hoadley, with confirmation of the selection by wire after thorough canvassing.
Cincinnati attorneys rushed to Judge Judson Harmon’s office to congratulate him on his appointment as attorney general. Born near Cincinnati, Harmon is noted as a leading lawyer and popular citizen with a long Ohio career and diverse political shifts. Senator Smith of New York predicts ex-Secretary Whitney could be a president, praising his popularity and unity for the Democratic party.
A large rebel band besieged a mill at Tranquilidad defended by an officer and twenty five men. Government troops counterattacked in a bayonet assault, routing the rebels. Four rebels killed, several wounded, while four Spanish soldiers died and five were wounded.
Governor Marton pardoned Patrick Shanon and John Henry who in August 1804 were sentenced to one year in the New York penitentiary for entering a building with intent to steal. News reaches Rancich North Carolina of a double killing on a Mecklenburg County farm. Ben Boyea and Wl Kimball quarrelled. Kimball fired first, Boyea fell. While dying Boyea drew a pistol and shot Kimball in the abdomen, Kimball died almost instantly.
A Victoria special reports the schooner Kodiak wreck off Kodiak island with many crew frozen in rigging or drowned. Nearby the San Francisco schooner C G White suffered ten deaths. In Missouri, three men die in a mine collapse at Fall River Doe Run Lem shaft as Bart Lavars, Richard Ls Cuc, and Robert Penderthy perish from injuries.
