A Lake St. George Quebec convent fire killed seven Ursuline sisters who died protecting their charges at Our Lady of Lake St. John. The sisters led students to safety, then perished from heat and smoke. others escaped to hotels and homes.
In St Louis Convicted millionaire double murderer Arthur Duestrow attacked burglar George Kendal during exercise hour. Kendal was hurled to the floor as Duestrow leaped onto him, kicking face and head while cursing. Guards restrained the assailant and Kendal was badly injured.
Three liquor dealers in Amsterdam New York are accused of selling intoxicants without liquor tax certificates. Grand jury declined indictments. Excise Commissioner Leman seeks injunctions to restrain the trio from further liquor traffic, the first such action in the state.
A 20 million mortgage was filed with the New York Register to Farmers Loan and Trust by Commercial Cable Company pledging telegraph properties and franchises including Postal Telegraph. The loan funds will back 500 percent gold bonds and debenture stocks totaling the mortgage amount. In Madrid Havana dispatches say Gen Zegue defeated insurgent Maximo Gomez at Arroyo Blanco leaving Gomez with 105 dead. rebels in Pinar del Rio are dwindling.
Delaware and Hudson Canal directors voted to cut the annual stock dividend from seven percent to a lower level due to a shrinkage in business for the year. In Bangor Maine, Augustus P. D. Manson leaves $10,000 to the Bangor Public Library for a building and £5,000 each to the Children's Home and Home for Aged Women.
Albany dispatch reports Governor Black urging a broad civil service bill. Assemblyman Henry E Abell of Brooklyn to draft a reform allowing appointing officers to choose from all qualified candidates rather than only the top scorer. Departments review and support various related measures including prisons, banking, labor unity schemes, naval militia, and forest preservation financing.
The fortieth Illinois General Assembly opened as Gov Altgeld delivered his message and adjournment set for Monday. Party leaders remain in town to monitor senatorial contest timing. In Jefferson City the Supreme Court ruled Jones v Pulitzer in Jones favor, upholding Col Charles H Jones’ five year control of the Post-Dispatch and barring Pulitzer and directors from interference.

Ithaca New York January president Schurman announced the panel for the four dollar memorial prize debate at Cornell. The judges include Hon J B Stanchfield Elmira Hon John W Church Norwich and Henry B Emerson city education superintendent of Buffalo.
Canton January 7 Senator Allison said after a conference with Major McKinley that he would not join McKinley’s cabinet. Rumors place Senator Sherman as likely secretary of state with Allison praising Sherman’s fitness. General Felix Agnus opposed Cary’s cabinet appointment. McKinley returned to Cleveland for the week.
An Evening Journal report says Cornelius Bliss met President elect McKinley in Cleveland with Mark Hanna present. Bliss says their talk covered various matters but he will not disclose details. Washington reports list Bliss as a prospective Navy secretary and notes other postmaster nominations.

Washington January 7 post office orders against Union Drug Boston and revokes order against Advertisers News company Vultee secretary. St Louis January 7 death of Maj General Miguel Regrete noted from City of Mexico.
Albany marked the 100th anniversary of the state capitol with a grand ball at the armory attended by Gov Black Lieut Gov Woodruff and state leaders. The day’s events included a procession to Harmanus Bleecker bell and speeches by Chauncey M Depew Ex Lieut Gov Alvord and Bishop Deane before a 5000-person audience.
Hartford reports both branches of the 1897 Connecticut General Assembly convened after a heavy snowstorm. Joseph B. Barbour was elected speaker, with officers named for the house. The senate elected pro tempore W. H. Marigold and clerk Samuel Eddy. Gov. Larrin A. Cooke was inaugurated with a parade and a salute at Bushnell Park. A joint session adjourned after formalities as committees were named. An Albany civil service exam for chief clerk of the state board of charities is announced for February 3 with a $1,200 to $1,500 salary.
Albany Tan July 7 The bill introduced by Assemblyman Philo provides for a greater Utica including annexation of parts of Deerfield Marry Whitestone and New Hartford to the city.
A three section Worcester Salt Special train carrying 5,450,000 pounds of salt left Silver Springs New York for New England firms. The train, decorated with banners, heads via Erie to Jersey City and Consolidated to Boston. Officials and press members accompanied the shipment amid a public gathering and cheers.
Hollers in Wyandotte Kansas offering $75,000 road certificates assigned to a local attorney for potential compromise at 40 cents on the dollar. The county long paid interest, then defaulted. payment defeated by populist legislature to teach the folly of gambling in Kansas.
The battleship Oregon under Captain Llewison is ordered to sea from San Francisco on the 13th for drill and target practice. After a ten day cruise it will likely arrive at San Diego.
