Strikers Unarmed as Deputies Testify at Latimer Trial

In Wiles Barre Pennsylvania on February 9 the Latimer trial resumed with testimonies from Evan Jones chief of police West Hazleton and others. Deputies allegedly threatened strikers and tore a flag while the sheriff ordered no march to Latimer. Witnesses described gunfire at Latimer lasting about five minutes with no found weapons on strikers. An electrician Me Dowell died in a Broadway incident and Mrs. Hollister seeks a divorce in Mount Vernon.

Tax Collector Arrested After Barn Break-In and Woes

Lyons February 9 Tax collector Abraham Zopfy is arrested on a charge of malicious mischief for breaking into Jacob Rankert’s barn to remove a horse cutter wagon and other property after allegedly failing to locate an open barn for a tax levy of 17,500 to repair county buildings. Rankert claims Zopfy was ejected violently causing a spine injury and a $10,600 damage suit. Warrants issued by Police Justice Williams. Bondsmen provided Detective Sharp as bodyguard during levies.

Ex-leather broker Tebbitts indicted in Boston by grand jury

Avram Tebbitts former leather broker of 116 Bedford Street Boston was indicted by the Suffolk grand jury on charges of obtaining goods by false pretenses from several leather firms. The warrant goes to the governor for extradition to obtain papers from Washington while officers pursue Tebbitts in Regina Northwest Territory.

New Trial For Willie Hammond

TORONTO February 9 W J Hammond the young medical student sentenced to be hanged February 18 at Bracebridge for the murder of his wife Katie T Hammond has been granted a new trial by the court of appeals. His counsel contended the prisoner's evidence at the coroner s inquest was inadmissible at the trial. It was overruled and the evidence was admitted. An appeal followed and the judges upheld the contention granting a new trial.
