R G Dun & Co reports 1898 had 122 failures with liabilities of 148 684 241, banking failures add 18 705 588, commercial failures 12 112 and 129 004 463, manufacturing 56 761 622, trading 61 885 943. Despite fewer failures, average liabilities per failure are low. The year marks US expansion and rising European lending, with exports and balance of trade highlighting increased European banking interest.
In Am brose Ozark county two men were killed and two wounded after they went to arrest William Barton for a reward. Barton killed Henry Winger and wounded the elder Cobb before surrendering after fatally wounding Winger. Barton may be jailed or dead. Local excitement runs high as a Gainesville posse closes in.
President Roosevelt and family were arrested in Albany at 4 15 yesterday afternoon after a Southwest limited train stop. Governor elect Roosevelts party, including two secretaries, went to the executive mansion where they dined with Governor Black. No announcements were made. The scene drew 209 people at the station despite the rain.

The Canadian government announces a reciprocal postage concession reducing domestic letter rates to 2 cents, effective January 1, under the postal convention with the United States. Messages to Canada from the U.S. will now bear 2 cents, replacing the prior 3 cent rate.
The funeral of Senor Romero, the late Mexican ambassador, will be held tomorrow at St Matthew's Catholic Church with a requiem mass. The body will be laid temporarily in Mount Olivet cemetery until Mrs. Garcia can travel from Mexico. honorary pallbearers include the British and German ambassadors, senior officials, and lawmakers. United States troops departed Charleston for Cuba aboard the transport Minnewaska and Manitoba and the Ward line steamer Saratoga. Major supplies and baggage accompany the units as ships sail, with voyage times of several days.
Gondensed dispatches report the death of Ambassador Romero of Mexico in Washington.
Washington says General Otis at Manila has not confirmed Miller's troops landing at Tlaile and says Navy plans a Manila Guam mail service. The Yosemite will carry mail to Guam at least every two months, using ocean transport.
The report notes a decrease in vessel numbers and tonnage at Rustate during the current season with 5643 vessels and a Connie of 6105,789 cleared from ports. Despite the drop, vessel size has grown, and observers expect a marked increase in next year’s activity.
In Wilkesbarre region a cave in at Wanamie near the Lehigh and Wilkesbarre Coal company trapped five men who were later rescued. three remain entombed with hopes they will be saved.
