More Bodies Found After Portland Wreck Off Cape Cod
Corrected reports from towns along Cape Cod show 18 bodies washed ashore after the steamer Portland wreck. The vessel went to pieces in the storm near the cape between 9 and 10 o'clock Sunday morning. Wreckage and bodies appeared from Highland Light to Chatham, with passengers and crew totaling about 120 to 103 in various estimates. The disaster sparked theories on the ship’s fate and a race to identify the dead, including several named individuals from Boston and Maine.
