Florida Lawmaker Reelected Despite Segregation Clash

Florida State Rep. John B. Orr Jr. was reelected amid controversy over his gun for segregation stance. He defeated Republican Theodore Bachmann 95,002 to 71,688 as Democrats gained wins in a primary that featured attacks on his support for a 67-senator plan. Orr’s bid followed a July session admission to the NAACP. Powell, pledging to vote Dem, warned of party discipline risks amid Eastlandist tensions.

Lynch Victim Found Safe In Alabama Golf Suit Postponed

Federal Judge Emnett C Choate indicated the suit by Negroes seeking integration at the West Palm Beach Municipal Golf Course will be tried late this winter or next spring. He ruled the City Commission and Golf Commission act in official capacities but the Golf Commission may still be a defendant. Four Negro golfers filed suit June 18 claiming they cannot use the course. Suits from Miami and Fort Lauderdale remain pending. In other news Talmadge Z Roux will receive an award at District 10 meeting of the Florida Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers for 20 years service at Mays High School Goulds and state PTAs. Roux has long served as president or vice president and is from Jasper, Fla. He is active at New Bethel Church. Mrs Rubye Watson presides District 10 PTA.

Florida inmate recaptured after jail escape and lynching fear

Jesse Woods, 39, escaped from Wildwood county jail and was flogged for greeting a white woman. He was brought to state prison in Florida City for safekeeping Sunday after being found in Andalusia, Alabama. Florida officers and the FBI had hunted him for a week amid lynching fears. An unidentified Florida Sheriffs Bureau deputy transported him.

Check Forgers Draw Prison Terms In Federal Court

A local couple received 13 years in federal prison for forging and stealing at least 19 government checks. Louis West, 32, of 1801 NW 2nd Ct., got 10 years after pleading guilty to 16 counts. Geneva West, 19, received 3 years after pleading guilty to 3. Judge W. Whitehurst noted the potential for harsher terms yet imposed the sentences.

Old Building to Be Razed in City Fire Hazard Case

A two-story dilapidated structure at NW 3rd Ave and 10th St will be razed after a two year condemnation order by the Department of Slum Rehabilitation and Prevention was upheld by the City Board of Appeals. Owned by Robert Davis of 1843 NW 3rd Ct.

Bunche Named to Three-Man Watch Dog Panel in Middle East

UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold appointed Dr Ralph Bunche to a three man watchdog committee to report on the Middle East crisis. The panel also includes UN Undersecretaries Ilya Tchernychev of Russia and Konstantin Stavropoulos of Greece.

Jazz great Art Tatum dies at 46 in Los Angeles

Art Tatum, renowned jazz pianist, dies at 46 from uremia after falling ill on tour. Born in Toledo, he began on violin then piano, gaining fame as a leading jazz exponent by age 22. He was nearly blind in one eye and hospitalized at Queen of Angels before his death.

Jax Atty Loses JP Race to Sarah Bryan in Election

In Jacksonville Ernest D. Jackson registered as E. D. Jackson and led write-ins but lost the justice of peace seat to Sarah Bryan. Bryan won 6,071 votes while Jackson totals ranged to 5,296 after canvassing. Ray Boree, a white write-in, received 1,283 votes.

Miss Mary Lee Ronson Engaged To Army Specialist Leroy Sims Jr

Miss Mary Lee Ronson daughter of Mr and Mrs Jesse J Robinson of Homestead announces her engagement to Specialist Third Class Leroy Sims Jr son of Mr Leroy Sims Sr and Mrs Jennie K Lane of Sarasota. Ronson a Florida A&M University graduate is a teacher at A L Lewis Elementary in Homestead. Sims joined the army last year after preparatory medical studies at Florida A&M and served in Japan before returning to the United States and now at Fort Campbell.

New Bethel Church Welfare Dept Distributes $50000

Detroit church leader Rev. C L Franklin announced that over ten years the Welfare Department of New Bethel Baptist Church has donated more than 50000 to destitute families. Funds funded clothing food rent and train fares for South region evacuees with some legal aid aid for rights inquiries.

Young Gunmen Rob Bus Driver in Miami Hold-Up

Two youths robbed a Miami Transit Co. bus driver, John H. Paparelli, late Wednesday at NW 2isi Ave and Tist St, escaping with $13. Police said the driver was parked without passengers and the gunmen used a .32 revolver.

Florida A&M to meet Tennessee State in Orange Blossom Classic

Florida A and M and Tennessee State University will meet in the Orange Blossom Classic on December 1 in the Orange Bowl. The Tigers and the Rattlers are ranked 1-2 nationally and are favorites to claim the national title, each aiming to finish undefeated in their remaining games.
