Five Die As Train Strikes Virginia School Bus
Farmville Virginia five children were killed and 10 injured when a passenger train struck the rear of a crowded school bus at a crossing along Route 460. The bus carried 44 pupils, witnesses said the impact sheared off part of the bus as debris scattered along the Folk and Western Railway main line between Roanoke and Norfolk. A corporal from Key West on furlough from Percy J. Army Hospital was visiting his mother in Farmville.

The Girl Scouts of the Hibiscus area marked 39 years with a Sunday program at Dunbar Elementary School cafeteria hosted by Dunbar Intermediate troops. Leaders Association president Mrs Clarice Littles led, with Susan Ashe as MC and Dempsey Creary and Maude Diaz among speakers. A pageant titled Candles for Service told the scouts story. Brownies participated as did leaders, parents, and friends. Cookie Cushman donated a birthday cake, Exotic Gardens and Perry Florist provided flowers. Refreshments followed.

Man gets eight years for shooting sweetheart
