Cotton Club Benefit Nets $8690 for Widow of Slain Officer
The Sam Singers Cotton Club on Miami Beach hosted a benefit show on Monday night raising 8690 for Mrs. Leroy La Fleur widow of the slain policeman. Winchell organized the event with top celebrities including Jimmy Durante Billy Daniels Eddie Cantor John Carroll Danny Thomas Sugar Ray Robinson Edna La Motta and guests. Major contributions came from Mrs Winchell and Martin Tannerbam at 1000 each and Eddie Cantor Sugar Ray Frank Rosen Arthur Bear Ben Lewis and Little Palm Club at 500 each.

A full scale probe into the Laundry Workers Union targets its leaders and organizers. Dave Kaye and Lollie Isaac, both White, are linked to the attempted murder of Holton Newbold who was found shot and wounded. Newbold accuses them of terror acts and killings of two other Negro men from the canal. Nimmo, the sole Black local organizer, cooperates with investigators while guards feared threats against him. Gun permits surfaced, issued through City Commissioner Bandel.
