Miami's colored citizens will gain two new municipal swimming pools in Coconut Grove and Liberty City as part of a $1,117,945 1950-51 budget. The pools will mirror the $80,000 Dixie Park pool opening next week. The budget notes Miami Springs golf course earned a $10,056 profit this year, countering prior claims of revenue loss from allowing colored players.
A Memorial Day weekend record shows 677 deaths from all causes with 334 on highways. Florida reported seven deaths. The National Safety Council blamed mass carelessness and an extra holiday day between the weekend and holiday. A United Press survey counted 16 at crashes and 101 drownings among four days.
After more than two decades the city commits to rebuilding Third Avenue from SW First to NW 20th Street. The long troubled route will see a new pavement before summer’s end, ending years of patchwork that frustrated Miami drivers.
Circuit Judge Charlies A. Carroll dismissed a suit to halt the June vote on slum clearance and public housing, denying requests to bar agreements with the Miami Housing Authority and to challenge its tax status. The case, filed by Thomas H. Anderson for Claude M. Barnes, challenged petition validity and city authority. The Florida Supreme Court must decide the referendum's fate on Tuesday.
In Chicago, four teenage girls received prison terms from 14 to 50 years for the murder of 16 year old Lavon Cain in a school feud. Edwina Howard, 19, got 50 years for the fatal shot. Wilma Howard, 14, and Helen Rivers, 17, plus Evelyn Rivers, 19, each received 14 years. The victims and defendants were linked by family ties.
Carlos R. Mendez a 28 year old Puerto Rican was bound over to county authorities on a charge of stealing 4009 dollars worth of linens from two Miami Beach hotels. Detectives arrested him after a three day hunt and said the fence who bought the loot likely fled to Saratoga New York. Bond was set at 5000 dollars by Judge Thomas Ferguson.
Mrs Hattie Chapman reported a Monday attack at 4th Avenue NW when a man forced entry after posing as Western Union. The assailant stabbed her in the back as she fled to escape, then fled. She was treated at Jackson Memorial Hospital and released. she identified no further details.
Boston report states the Sorosis Club of Orlando, Florida, received a $3,000 grant from the General Federation of Women's Clubs as the winning entry in a Negro aid drive announced Wednesday night. The award underscores support for humanitarian efforts and community aid programs led by local women’s groups.
Circuit Judge George E. Holt sentenced Asher Crawford, 34, to 20 years in prison for the November 2 1949 slaying of Roosevelt Robinson 22. In a separate case Lt John Morgan Williams 25, was sentenced by Judge Ben C. Willard to five years for robbery and assault on Warren Whipple 68 at Miami Shores Country Club on April 15.
The Orlando club awarded a $3 000 second prize in the Build Better Community contest. The group sponsored medical aid for Negro neighbors, offered a free Bookmobile library service and established a nursery to care for children while mothers shopped.
Dwight R. G. Palmer president of General Cable Corporation and John G. Sengstacke publisher of the Chicago Defender were chosen by the National Urban League trustees for the 1950 Two Friends Award. The honor recognizes interracial teamwork for the good of the American community. Both served on the President's Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the armed services, whose final report was released this week.
Edith Chandler and Roy Boggs wed at the home of Dr and Mrs W M Murrell on NW 6th avenue. Rev E T Graham officiated at 6 pm with bride in embroidered eyelet white organdy and pink accents. The couple plans a two week honeymoon to Grand Rapids Michigan.
