City officials and civic leaders gathered Thursday to dedicate the new eighty thousand dollar Dixie Park swimming pool. Mayor Wolfort h and Acting City Manager Bloodworth spoke along with Judge Thomas and ex Commissioner Quigg who helped push the project. Music by Calypso Eddie accompanied a program that included diving and swimming exhibitions and small awards for senior junior and juvenile events.

Miami proposes $10 million slum clearance and housing plan
Acting City Manager Bloodworth applied for a federal survey to study slum conditions and incomes as the Miami Commission authorized a $10,000,000 low income housing project. Sidewalks Move Forward In Miami Plan With Funding
Exclusive interview with Mayor William Wolforth confirms the Colored section will be included in the new sidewalk contract. A 60 mile scope was set Wednesday with over half a million dollars allocated, covering nine square miles of Miami near NE and NW 36th street, 17th Ave, and Coral Way. Total construction funds reach 1.2 million, nearing use of the 1.5 million initial phase of a 6.8 million program, with six months for engineering. Two White Miami policemen, William Reddish and Cullen Thompson, were sentenced to 18 months each for extorting 800 dollars from a Negro, after a jury conviction. They begin serving at Raiford, with Judge Ben C. Willard denouncing misconduct by public officials. The May 14, 1949 arrest followed Hoffman Rolle incident and threats to arrest if money was not paid.

Groveland pair denied reprieve face death in Florida
The Florida Supreme Court refused to reconsider its ruling upholding the death sentences for Samuel Shepherd and Walter Irvin for the rape of a Lake County teenager. Drunk Man Slain After Killing Son
Detroit police, responding to a report of a man shooting his son, surrounded a home where Norman Doe Sr. 55 shot and killed his son Norman Jr. 3, a Wayne University student. A police siege ended when Doe was fatally wounded by a shotgun and a fellow officer, James Downey, shot him dead.

Record 793 Die In Long Holiday Weekend
