Ministers Arrested in Montgomery Bus Boycott Leads Black Protest

Twenty four ministers and about fifty other Negroes were arrested in Montgomery Alabama on charges of violating the anti boycott law. Rev Martin Luther King Jr 27 year old Dexter Ave Baptist Church pastor among those held. Rosa Parks also arrested for appealing a fine after refusing to move to the back of a bus. The wave of arrests followed a large grand jury indictment related to the boycott. Powell seeks White House protection for those indicted describing the actions as new law in American barbarism.

Winter Golf Tourney Opens Monday at Miami Springs

The $1000 North-South Florida winter golf tour begins Monday at the Miami Springs Golf Course near Hialeah. Ray Mitchell sponsors the fourth annual event, a four day affair through March 1, welcoming professionals, amateurs and women from California and other regions to compete on the famed Miami Open course. Notable participants include Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby, Junior Gilliam, Joe Black, Don Hall of the Treniers, Earl Jackson, Don Newcombe, Arthur Prysock, Dinah Washington, Nat Cole, and John Holman.

Two Miami killers die in electric chair

George Anderson and Percy Ambrister were executed in the electric chair at Ryford prison early Monday after more than a year in the death house. Limpy, age 34, and Wassie Blue, 25, were pronounced dead six minutes after the current. Bodies were to be returned to Miami for burial with families arranging final disposition through a funeral home in Starke.

King of Clubs Forum Ends Sunday

The King of Clubs conclude a forum series titled The Forward Look in Human Relations with Mrs. Lullelia W. Harrison as Day speaker. The 3:30 p.m. event occurs Sunday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church auditorium. Harrison, Supreme Grammateus Syntakus of Zeta Phi Beta, has held regional directorships and was grand basileus from 1943 to 1948. She was Houston’s 1950 Woman of the Year and serves on the Bi racial Board of Negro Child Center.

Reynolds engagement announced in Dade County notice

Mr and Mrs F W Reynolds announce the engagement of their daughter Sylvia Yvonne to Corporal Alvin Espy of the U S Air Force. Sylvia is a Dorsey High School and Bethune Cookman College graduate now employed in the Dade County school system. Espy, son of Mrs Elizabeth Espy, is with the Guided Missiles division of the Army at Fort Hancock New Jersey awaiting a September discharge. He is a Carver High School and Morehouse College alumnus.

Mrs Etta Walker Sentenced to 10 Years for Manslaughter

Mrs Etta Mae Walker a 25 year old of 2162 NW Fifth Ave was sentenced to 10 years in Raiford prison for manslaughter in the December 23 fatal stabbing of her common law husband Robert 30 by Circuit Judge Harold R Vann. Convicted of the lesser charge a week earlier she claimed she only meant to slash him after he visited a girlfriend instead of keeping a Christmas shopping date.

Court to Hear Lucy Alabama Suit Wednesday

Birmingham Alabama federal court halted immediate exploration into riots at the University of Alabama and the barring of a black coed from campus. The court left all elements for development February 29 when university officials must show cause why they should not be cited for contempt. Attorneys for Autherine Lucy claim unrest was used as a tactic to remove her, violating a federal order guaranteeing admission regardless of race.
