The Dunbar Day Nursery association announces a campaign to raise 10 000 dollars to build and equip a 60 child nursery opening February 16 in Dor sey Park. The drive lasts one month with Negro and White Miami Junior Chamber of Commerce members collaborating, and plans include university extension use and state county code compliance.
The 20th Annual King of Clubs Forum meets at Ebenezer Methodist Church on Sunday at 4 o’clock with Dr. Jesse O Thomas. He is assistant to vice chairman at the American Red Cross National Headquarters and will speak on Some Important Dates in The Chronological History of the American Red Cross. Dr. Thomas has held key roles in Tuskegee Institute Voorhees Institute Atlanta University School of Social Work Southern Urban League and U S Treasury War Bond Division. His broad training and four decades of public service mark him as eminence and worth listening to.
Carpenters painters and plasterers met at the Community Center 340 NW 12th street with White labor groups to discuss grievances of skilled Negro workers now jobless despite veteran projects under construction. Rev Edward T Graham chaired the meeting and organizers raised concerns about contractor hiring bias and fairness in area projects.

Joe Louis told Barry Gray on Wednesday he would not enter spots that deny his people equal privileges. He declined an invitation to visit Copa City and appear on Gray’s program.
Joe Louis the retired heavyweight champion outclassed Gene Jones in a slow 10 round exhibition at Miami Stadium drawing about 15 000 fans. Louis dominated with stalking rights and lefts while Jones offered little in return. In the main event Jimmy Bivins of Cleveland completely outclassed Willis Red Applegate of Montclair New Jersey in every round.
A $1000 mural painting of Mrs Ann Coleman will be unveiled at a Tea on Thursday February 16 in her honor. The painting will be placed in the Dorsey Memorial Library to recognize her leading role in securing this branch. The Tea is sponsored by a citizens committee led by Arlington Sands and Miss Helen Fisher at St Agnes Parish House.
In a lackluster show, Bivins failed to secure a decisive finish against Applegate, settling for a decision. The night featured Willie Ferguson’s six round win over Billie Taylor and draws for Jake Simmons vs Ray Lewis and Sugar Boy Williams vs Tiger Tipp. Rocky Graziano teased a March 6 Coral Gables bout while Sugar Ray Robinson was slated to face Al Mobley on February 13 at the Coli.
The Walker Smiths and Ray Robinsons arrive by pullman from New York Sunday afternoon with their baby. They will stay two weeks at 340 NW 15th St and join Ray’s fiancée Edna Mae Holly and newborn born Nov 13. Ray plans a Feb 13 bout at the Coliseum with Al Mobley and also will appear in Jacksonville Orlando and Savannah. He brings golf clubs and deep sea fishing tackle for leisure.
Historic Los Angeles mansion once built by the late Bill Robinson may be sold at auction to cover a $644.86 debt. Rev. Clayton D. Russell owned the home. a jeweler, Anna Neft of Neft Jewelry Company, claims money owed related to a purchase linked to Truman inauguration events.
Neville Simmons, 18, of 377 NW 15th St., was shot to death early Thursday by Patrolman Ernest Hayes during a burglary call at Stones Grocery, 1244 NW 4th Ave. Officers pursued three suspects atop the building. Simmons halted too late and was fatally struck in the head by a single round.
