Second School Integration Suit Dismissed Again

Judge Emnett C Choate dismissed a suit by parents of six Negro children seeking immediate desegregation in Dade County schools for the second time while allowing a new case. The court found no present act by the School Board depriving plaintiffs of rights and noted no admission denial claims were made. The NAACP plans to appeal to the Fifth Circuit.

West Palm Beach Negroes Lose Golf Pool Lease Election

Last Tuesday a small turnout decided whether the city should sell or lease its golf course and swimming pool to private hands to evade integration. Of 27,696 qualified voters, 4,499 cast ballots. Pool lease won by 259 votes, golf course by 187, with Roosevelt Park precinct showing heavy white-black voting contrast. The two propositions drew 2,328 to 2,069 in pool leasing and 2,261 to 2,074 in golf course leasing.

Kentucky School Bars Integration Opposer

Billy Branham a Detroit teen sought enrollment in Louisville high school to oppose forced integration. He offered a 254.64 dollar non resident tuition, but assistant principal refused. City School Superintendent Omer Carmichael praised for integration efforts said Branham’s public stance could invite troublemakers to enroll.

Jury Probes Powell Taxes in Grand Jury Probe

A federal grand jury began examining the tax affairs of Rep. Adam Clayton Powell and Harlem civic leader. Judge Ryan ordered production of Powell’s congressional records and those of his employer. Powell is traveling and unavailable until December 16. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bolan said the panel also subpoenaed Powell’s ministerial salary records.

Court Rules Union Ban on Negroes Legal

Milwaukee circuit judge ruled that Negroes barred from union membership have no legal redress in courts. Two Milwaukee bricklayers claimed denial by Local 8 officers Ebert and Frey. Attorney Dorsey said appeal to Wisconsin Supreme Court will be filed, arguing statutes declare admission into a union a right, not a privilege.

Supreme Court rejects time delay in Mansfield school integration

The Supreme Court upheld its ruling that local opposition cannot delay racial integration in Mansfield Texas high school. The Mansfield School Board sought more time to desegregate after rioting at term opening when three Black students admitted by court order. A New Orleans appellate order demanded full integration despite private and public opposition.

Federal Judge Gets Tough in Clinton High School Case

Federal officers arrested 15 people on criminal contempt charges tied to racial violence at Clinton High School as the district court under Judge Robert Taylor returns to hardline action. Bond for W H Till was set at 12000, with warrants issued for 16 and 12 Negroes admitted earlier this year amid ongoing protests. The Anderson County school board votes to renew the integrated operation, while incidents including the assault of Rev Paul Turner spark renewed federal involvement.
