Dark opening night at Miami Stad ium ends in tragedy

Baseball fans witnessed fireworks and spectacle as Satchel Paige arrived by helicopter and the Miami Marlins beat the Buffalo Bisons 10-3. A fatal ambulance crash near State Road 7 killed Leroy Jackson, 56, of West Palm Beach, and Werner Schulz, with Julius Fisher injured. the incident overshadowed the celebration.

Two 16 Year Olds Face Criminal Charges in Miami Shooting

Two 16 year old boys, Winston Clark and Lawrence Anderson, were sent to criminal court after juvenile court hearings. Clark faces assault with intent to kill for shooting Patrolman Richard Franklin, who was wounded in the arm during a pursuit near SW 8th Street and 25th Avenue. Both youths are also charged with multiple counts of breaking and entering and auto theft based on a car theft spree and car break-ins observed during the chase.

King Cole Attackers Get Six Months Jail Terms

Three Citizens Council members received maximum 180 day terms for attacking Nat King Cole on stage in Birmingham. A fourth man drew 180 days for conspiracy to breach the peace and disorderly conduct. Cole, shaken but unhurt, praised the verdict as a moral triumph. He spoke from Louisville after performing for a mixed crowd of 10,000.

Patrolman John Glass Suspended Amid Incident

A sequence of unclear notes states Patrolman John Glass from 6878 West 10th Court was detained with officers Walter Hedel and Alex. The text mentions a restraint and attempts at intervention by Patrolman O. Hayes. Gordon is identified as a county school patrolman.

Dade County Teachers Win 5 Percent Pay Increase

Dade County teachers Wednesday received a 5 percent raise with a tentative promise of another raise for 1957 58. The boost takes effect in September raising starting salaries to 3 450 and the maximum teacher pay to 6 075 while principals reach 8 394. Teachers with under three years in the system do not receive raises.

Burke Indicted in Cuba Slaying

Oscar Will Burke aged 40 of 151 NW 8th street was bound over to the grand jury on a first degree murder charge after a confrontation over a Cuban lottery bet. He allegedly shot James Ford, 41, of 339 NW 18th street, at the Fu Manchu Restaurant where both worked two weeks earlier.

Man Burned to Death in Liberty City Garage Fire

A 45 year old man identified as Fairbanks was burned to death when fire swept through a garage living quarters at 1541 NW 67th street in Liberty City early Thursday. Dock Key, 66, escaped after seeing smoke and ice at 1 am and told police he did not know Fairbanks was in the other part of the structure. The fire was extinguished minutes after fire crews arrived and Fairbanks' charred body was found during wreckage probing.

Self defense claim in chest and forehead shooting

Burke told police he believed Ford reached for a weapon in his pocket and fired in self defense. Police found no other weapon at the scene.

Grand Jury Indicts Killer of Three in Dade County

Edward Bubba Roberts 28 was indicted for first degree murder in three cases by the Dade County grand jury on April 2. He is charged in the fatal shooting of his wife Blanche 24 and her parents James and Miriam Smith at their home 6930 NW 18th Ave.
