Althea Gibson, first Negro to play a major Southern tennis event, won two events and placed second in a third at Flamingo Park Miami Beach on the Good Neighbor Tournament. She defeated Betty Rosenquest 6-4 6-2 in the women's singles, with Suzanne Herr and Rhoda Hopkins taking doubles, and Gibson partnering Tony Vincent to win the mixed doubles. Rosenquest praised Gibson for her character and skill after the event.
Melvin Womack a 27 year old grave worker, beaten and stabbed to death last week in Oakland, a citrus town near Orlando. Orange County Sheriff Dave Starr said the death came from bruises and a puncture under the left armpit. A witness named four White men as assailants. The sheriff labeled the killers night riders. No Ku Klux Klan link found. Womack reportedly had a good reputation and investigators follow clues with no motive disclosed.
The Afro American Insurance Company marks its 59th anniversary with a Directors night at Duval County Armory attended by Mayor Haydon Burns, Bishop John A. Gregg, and Norman Houston. Miami director Kelsey Pharr MC. Company serves Florida Georgia Alabama with five million dollar assets and branches.
In Charleston South Carolina the city Democratic convention convened marking the first unsegregated gathering since 1890. About 25 Negroes joined roughly 400 delegates in a historic party meeting.
New York A Negro presided over the New York City council for the first time in the history of the council. He is Earl.
Four national Jewish agencies join in a Miami release condemning the American Peace Crusade pilgrimage to Washington as a Communist ploy to exploit world events for the Kremlin. Sam W. Shapiro and Gilbert J. Balkin of the Anti-Defamation League release the joint statement. The agencies cited are ADL Bnai Brith American Jewish Committee Jewish Labor Committee and Jewish War Veterans.
