Terror and the Middle East Violence and its political echo across decades
AP Special Correspondent William L. Ryan surveys a history of terror in the Middle East. He notes how violence signals retaliation, how Arab armed groups span the political spectrum, and how past Zionist and British actions shaped today’s conflict. The piece frames terror as a recurring tool in a volatile region driven by oil, the Suez Canal, and imperial promises.

Jump Gun On Strike At GM Plants Across North America
DETROIT AP United Auto Workers and General Motors bargainers failed to avert a strike as about 7500 workers began wildcat walkouts at three Canadian plants and a Framingham Massachusetts facility. The walkouts crippled operations at plants in Oshawa Ste Therese Windsor and Framingham. Three year contracts covering 713000 workers at GM Ford and Chrysler were due to expire at midnight. Senate leader Hugh Scott voiced concern but unlikely White House action. UAW President Leonard Woodcock said a strike would idle 344000 members in 145 locals in the US and Canada. The union targeted GM, Chrysler temporarily spared, and Ford untouched. Woodcock doubted Taft Hartley action would be used. Main issues: substantial wage gains, cost of living protections, and a $500 monthly pension after 30 years.
