Lawyers Refuse Court Appointments Over State Funds

The Audrain County Bar Association, led by President Robert Fenlon, will not accept court appointments for indigent defendants until state funds are available. Funds from the public defender act are delayed by the fiscal affairs committee and a Supreme Court suit, leaving attorneys unpaid. Fenlon says no bills since last April have been paid, and appointments may resume only for jailed indigents or defendants who bond out and hire their own counsel. State officials suggested a possible release of funds in about 30 days. The first refusals occurred this week in Magistrate Court, with many Circuit Court appointments postponed and cases continued to October 6.
