Combine Care Will Save You Dollars
Extension Agent Dale Schwarre notes that reducing combine losses from 10 to 5 percent in 40 bushel soybeans at $7 per bushel saves $4,200 per 100 hours of harvest. Best operators aim for 3 to 5 percent losses, while average losses run 10 to 12 percent, with most losses at the gathering unit. Suggestions: maintain knives and guards, cut close to ground, run about 3 mph, reel 25 percent faster than ground speed. Four or five soybeans per square foot equals one bushel.
