Fire Destroys 20 Blocks Of Tenements In Chelsea
A wind driven blaze roared through 20 blocks of wooden tenements and small businesses in Chelsea Massachusetts leaving about 1,100 homeless and 5 firefighters injured. As 500 National Guard troops cordoned off the scorched area, residents sought shelter with relatives or in a makeshift dormitory in an armory. Evacuation reached 3,000 to 4,000 at the blaze’s peak, which started in an abandoned storage building and stretched across a half mile wide swath of the industrial district. The fire, aided by gusts to 50 mph, burned for hours and was only contained along a railroad right of way. Police guarded against looting as recovery continued.
