Probe Begins on Nominee Ford for Vice President
House and Senate committees have launched background investigations into Gerald Ford as vice presidential nominee amid plans by majorities in both chambers to vote for him barring new disclosures. Ford says he sees no issues and notes he turned $11,500 contributions over to the Republican National Committee after the 1970 elections. Investigators will scrutinize his finances, with hearings expected within two weeks and television coverage allowed. An AP poll indicates broad support, with at least 57 senators and 225 House members ready to back the nomination unless new problems emerge.

Diseases Outsmarted by Miracle Drugs in CDC Warning
In Atlanta, the CDC warns that several so called miracle drugs long used to curb diseases may fail against newer strains of gonorrhea, typhoid, malaria, tuberculosis and shigellosis.
