Economic News At A Glance
Executives of two major grain exporting firms were summoned to meet with President Ford to discuss the administration's decision to hold up shipment of 125 million bushels of grain to the Soviet Union. Unemployment nationwide rose to 5.8 percent in September, the biggest jump since January and the highest in two years, with 440,000 joining the jobless rolls to total 5.3 million. Saudi Arabia and Iran pledged not to cut production to create shortages as demand pressures remain, while a cold wave caused hundreds of millions in crop damage across the Midwest and East. Ford will address Congress next Tuesday on the economy, signaling possible tax and credit measures, and he remains opposed to gas rationing or raising gasoline taxes. A task force shelved a staff report urging curbs on farm cooperatives as a method to curb food prices.
