Safety Laws Boost Cost Of School Buses
Safety requirements for next year's school buses may push price tags beyond reach for many districts. Prices have already risen 25 percent or more due to higher raw materials, with further hikes from padding and guard railings. A 66 passenger bus now costs 14 000 to 16 000, varying by state. Officials warn some districts may operate 10-year-old buses as costs rise.

Tax Status Of Hospitals Court Issue
Private Kansas City hospitals urge Missouri Supreme Court to uphold tax exempt status citing more than $10 million in unreimbursed patient care from 1967 to 1971 and arguing profits fund debt retirement and facility modernization while counts of 1971 net profits near $4.2 million. Opposing view says hospitals earn profit and favor paying patients, with Jackson County taxes initiated on St Luke's Baptist and Research hospitals.
