The federal government is preparing contingency plans to divert grain fuel supplies amid a coal strike. Officials say measures aim to keep critical operations running while negotiators work toward resolution.
Ron Kehl was appointed manager of Mexico customer service for A P Green Refractories Co directing a 20 member staff handling inquiries orders and other requests from Green customers across the U S He joined Green in 1961 advancing through sales roles and will relocate with his wife Dorothy and children to Mexico while continuing church affiliation with First Christian Church.
A 5 30 p m parade at North Callaway R 1 High School marks the Homecoming climax with a crowd at Thunderbird Field Kingdom City to follow. Five homecoming queen candidates Melinda Atkinson Lois Craighead Connie Rountree Norma Squires Cindy Rozier plus marching band pom pom drivers and class entries. Bonfire pep rally follows and halftime crowns the queen with contest winners announced. Activities directed by Lynn Prinster Joy Van Meter.
New York AP survey shows 96 percent still favor marriage, but many want to combine family and career and slow emphasis on obedience. Younger women favor fewer children, while premarital sex views shift downward. A majority now backs women’s movement goals and Ms title gains among singles.
Equitable Life Assurance Society has purchased the Hotel Muehlebach in downtown Kansas City, a 750 room landmark on 12th and Baltimore. Renovation plans and management details will be announced later. The hotel opened in 1915, hosted 10 presidents, and Truman signed the Greece Turkey aid program there in 1947.
Greece schedules its first parliamentary election in a decade for November 17 and a monarchy referendum promised by January 1. A caretaker government led by Caramanlis will replace the prior military regime’s government. The exact referendum date will be announced within 15 days of the vote and held within 30 days of that announcement. It remains unclear if former king Constantine II may return to Greece before the referendum.
The Mexico Knights of Columbus plan the second annual Tootsie Roll campaign for mental retardation funds. On Oct 11 12 and 13 volunteers will distribute Tootsie Rolls in major shopping areas to solicit donations. Last year the drive raised $1 000 for Handi Shop.
In Stephenville Texas ranchers delay a planned mass calf slaughter after an on scene appeal. Presidential aide David Wheat said he would try to arrange a Ford meeting though none is set. About 800 calves on the Beyer range were involved with 400 dairymen and ranchers present at the scene.
ST LOUIS AP Senator Thomas F Eagleton faced calls to release his medical records after Curtis a former Republican congressman turned Senate candidate asserted the disclosure would end sympathy votes over past nervous exhaustion Curtis said he would not weaponize Eagletons health unless convinced of renewed illness Eagleton rejected the tactic calling it desperation Polls show Curtis trailing in the race and Curtis says he issued the charges after a Missouri critic complained about his campaign tactics.
Mobil Oil Corp reduced its gasoline price by two cents per gallon today, aligning wholesale pricing with crude oil costs as required by federal regulations. The action follows the government’s rule tying wholesale gas prices to crude oil costs.
