Missouri Fiscal Panel Balks at Expanding Law Enforcement Council
Jefferson City officials report the state Fiscal Affairs Committee delayed action on a plan to let the Missouri Law Enforcement Assistance Council increase its staff and require regional units to match federal ant crime funds. Atty. Gen. Danforth warned that without approval federally funded programs could end. The panel also borrowed 1.4 million for Highway Patrol pay raises and approved federal funds for salaries in education and instructional TV director roles. A grant for rehabilitation pilot projects was not endorsed.

In St Louis County a 10-year-old boy, Tim Varnum, was swept 70 feet through a closed drainage ditch at Sylvan Springs Park during a Holy Family School picnic. Truck driver Steve Rey leaped into an open ditch and pulled him to safety before he was carried to the Mississippi River. Varnum suffered only cuts and bruises and received treatment at Cardinal Glennon Hospital. The preacher Father Arthur Leivinger praised the rescue as a miracle amid a day of rain across the area.
