Bill Would Require Grain Sales Revealed

Washington congressman Neal Smith proposes a bill to force grain exporters to report all abroad sales to the Agriculture Department within 48 hours. He argues secrecy harmed farmers during last summer’s Soviet grain deal, when futures speculation and delayed disclosures inflated prices and profits. The bill would amend the Commodity Exchange Act to ban futures purchases by exporters without disclosure and would require public release the next business day after receipt.

Other Growth Stimulants Replace DES

FDA bans DES implants for meat animals after April 21 1973 and sets a 120 day slaughter window for cattle implanted before the cutoff. Ralgro withdrawal is 65 days and DES cannot be used by feeding or implant.

Long Season Corn Still Preferred

The article notes questions about corn hybrid maturity as planting is delayed. It finds longer season hybrids yield better at all planting dates, with 115 day corn favored over 90 day varieties. Freeze damage is unlikely for 115 day corn planted by June 20, making early harvests an unlikely yield justification. Bill Murphy, State Extension Agronomy Specialist, comments that 90 day corn yields are 7 bushels less than 115 day at Columbia.
