Wait and See On Postal Service Reorg Plan

Congressional overseers will watch the Postal Service overhaul before judging the plan by Postmaster General Blount. The reorg would cut 15 regional centers to five, centralize authority, and reduce manpower while protecting 640,000 union workers. Officials foresee retirements for about 3,500 white collar workers as a result, with cautious doubt from lawmakers about the impact on service and expertise. The change aims to boost use of postal services amid a two-decade deficit trend under a Nixon-era subsidy to 1984.
