Missouri welfare division launches a five division reorganization aimed at better management service and communication. Bert Shulimson says changes are not tied to fraud probes and will involve some key positions without staff layoffs. Governor Bond supports Shulimson, while a legislative session continues on funding bills for state agencies and education.
Environmental Protection Agency officials face a decision on whether to approve marketing of up to 22 million chickens contaminated with dieldrin a pesticide linked to cancer. EPA scientists warn levels are well above allowed limits and health risks may far exceed the potential economic loss from destruction.
Actor Richard Burton in Oroville California during a Ku Klux Klan film shoot bought a $450 ruby diamond ring for 18 year old waitress Kim Dinucci and a ring for a jewelry store clerk while denying romance rumors. Publicist Wally Bean said the meeting was casual and not romantic. Burton also purchased a $600 brooch for his wife Elizabeth Taylor.
Julie Copeland was chosen first in the annual talent contest at Mexico High School Emmons Hall. She sang and accompanied herself on guitar, with eight groups total. Second place went to a sextet of Holly Nielsen Betsy Bailey Susan Friedberg Janis Bounds Judy Weber and Kathy Erdel. Former Labor Secretary James D. Hodgson is nominated as the U.S. ambassador to Japan. He would replace Robert S. Ingersoll, who left Tokyo to join the State Department. Hodgson, 58, has been senior vice president at Lockheed since resigning as labor secretary in 1973 and must be confirmed by the Senate.

Missouri Republicans delivered 34 000 responses to President Nixon from a Thanksgiving Day ad campaign in 69 Missouri papers. The group met Nixon in the White House and reported strong support for his Vietnam and inflation policies. They also sent 56 000 replies to House GOP leader Rhodes opposing Watergate spending and impeachment.

David Anthony Korte is the first child of Mr and Mrs Charles Korte of Columbia born at 2 24 PM Friday at Boone County Hospital weighing 5 pounds 12 ounces. Mr Korte is a 3 M Co assistant personnel manager and Mrs Korte a Boone County Hospital registered nurse. Grandparents include Mr and Mrs Frank A DiBlasi of Mexico and Mr and Mrs Fred Korte of Fayette with Mrs Tony DiBlasi of Mexico as great grandmother.
Mrs. Powell Bartlett 78 of Montgomery City died Thursday at St. Joseph Hospital in St. Charles. Born Nov 5 1895 in Montgomery City she married William B Bartlett in 1913 who survives at the home. Also surviving are daughter Roxa Myers and grandson Larry Myers both of St. Charles two sisters Margaret Jennings and Dora Callaway of Montgomery City and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Christian Church. Services pending at Schlanker Funeral Home.
