Senate votes to let states sponsor new child care
Washington AP The Senate approved a plan to let the Health, Education and Welfare secretary designate state sponsorships for federally funded child care programs as part of a $2.9 billion bill. The measure, supported by Sen. Mondale and a GOP Southern Democrat coalition, aims to create a large, voluntary day care system offering nutritional, educational, medical and social services to families, with free care for the lowest income groups and modest fees for others.

Meat Price Rise Serious Says Stein
Herbert Stein, chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers, warned that rising meat prices are a serious problem requiring patience from producers and workers. He said if cattlemen seek catchup prices, workers push wages above meat costs, or middlemen keep profits, the situation becomes impossible. Wholesale price hikes will appear in groceries, with the Price Commission set to meet soon, though he does not expect strong action. He urged goodwill and leadership to curb acceleration, speaking at the Grocery Manufacturers Association executive conference.
