Voting Rights Act advances in House after amendments fail
In Washington, the House moved toward passage of a voting rights bill as officials rejected several Republican amendments by wide margins. The measure would extend coverage to six Southern states and parts of others, adding bilingual ballots for areas with 5 percent non English speakers and low 1974 turnout, aiming to protect Spanish speakers, Indians, native Alaskans and Asian Americans.

World War II Vets May Still Qualify For GI Home Loans
The Veterans Administration reminded World War II veterans they may regain VA loan entitlement even after using it. Under the 1974 act, full entitlement can be restored if the prior loan is paid or the VA is released, or if another veteran assumes the loan with consent to use his entitlement. The max guaranty rose from 12,500 to 17,500 or 60 percent of the loan, whichever is less, allowing veterans with earlier smaller guaranties to have remaining balance restored. Veterans should contact their nearest VA office for details.

Texas doctors push for malpractice reform talks
Representatives from Texas and Rhode Island oppose work stoppages while planning talks with New York leaders on bills to cap malpractice awards. Meanwhile Texas doctors cancel nonemergency surgeries in Austin and San Antonio as anesthesiologists slow down, despite a two year coverage guarantee signed by Gov. Briscoe. In Niagara Falls a French aerialist pleads for approval to walk a tightrope across the falls, demonstrating his balance on stacked chairs above the river.

Synod Adopts Resolutions On Dissidents
The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod approved regulations to discipline dissidents within its three million member church. Resolutions target Seminex and ELIM with about 20 proposals to be reviewed at the 1975 Anaheim convention. Some measures push ouster of district presidents for improper ordinations and urge cessation of Seminex support. The plan also seeks to dissolve the English District and integrate it into existing geographic districts. The convention is expected to draw 1,500 members to Anaheim.
