Supreme Court hearing on Nixon tapes in Watergate case
White House counsel James D. St Clair argued the judiciary is being drawn into impeachment as the Supreme Court weighs whether Nixon must surrender recordings and documents sought by Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski. Jaworski pressed that a president cannot bypass court review, and the case also questions whether Nixon can be named an unindicted co conspirator. The justices questioned both sides as they extended the term to hear arguments amid tensions over presidential power and constitutional authority.
