Pensions Cost More Than Active Pay
The Pentagon will spend more on pensions for retired personnel this year than the Army pays to all active duty soldiers, with pension costs rising from 1.4 percent of the defense budget in 1962 to 8.2 percent in 1977. By GAO estimates, pensions may top 9 billion next year and reach 10 billion the following year, potentially hitting 30 billion by 2000. The system links pensions to active pay, swelling as forces shift to an all volunteer force. reforms are debated but unlikely to cut current retirees' benefits.
