State weighs buying new 2.5 million computer

State officials may purchase another 2.5 million dollar computer if the multi million dollar computerized accounting system being developed cannot run on existing hardware. An alternative is private computer services at about 300 thousand dollars annually. Negotiations with another state agency to share its computer have stalled amid disputes over capacity and legal use. The first phase costs about 6.7 million and aims to boost efficiency in state finances, with implementation expected late this year if a computer issue is resolved. Governor Teasdale seeks 2.4 million more to finish the initial phase. Administrations cite capacity limits at the Employment Security computer, financed federally, while an audit addresses legal concerns. Betty Adams notes potential legal issues in using the federal computer for state business.
