Doctor Enters Abortion Suit In Missouri Clash

Clayton Missouri AP A Roman Catholic physician opposed to abortion was allowed to intervene for the unborn child in a suit to block Missouri's abortion law. Judge Herbert Laskey allowed Dr M H Backer Jr a gynecologist to intervene for the infant and all similarly situated. The suit filed by doctors clergymen and women seeks a declaratory judgment to forbid enforcement of the law which allows abortion only to save the mother's life. The plaintiffs argue the law violates a woman's right to decide with her physician whether to terminate a pregnancy. Bernard Huger, counsel for the St Louis Archdiocese, said unborn child rights have been recognized in the past and should be recognized here.
