Burglars who knew what they were doing took between 1600 and 2000 dollars of mining equipment from the Hook Pit Maintenance building five miles east of the Kaiser Refractories plant on Route 1. They used bolt cutters to defeat locks and padlocks and fled with oil, sockets, hydraulic jacks, grinders, a generator, belts, and four padlocks. Deputy Littrell noted the thieves likely planned the break in and loaded goods through a north door. A separate break in at Mattingly's Variety Store yielded little of value beyond a camera, and was not detected until about 9 a.m. today.
