The EPA proposes cutting lead in gasoline starting July 1 1974 with a two gram per gallon limit on premium and regular fuels and a staged drop to 1.25 grams by January 1 1977. All large stations would offer at least one unleaded grade by July 1 1974. Present levels run about 2.5 grams per gallon. The plan also requires colored leaded gas to be distinct from unleaded, and mandates anti leakage measures and potential fines up to 10000 dollars per day for violators.
