Mexico high school boys basketball hosts Rolla in a grudge match after a split season series. Rolla won 82-66 in their first meeting, then Mexico edged Rolla 60-50 in the Capital City Tournament as coach Dwight Linnemeyer cites defensive adjustments and backdoor plays as factors. Mexico 23 in conference.
Dan Marley, a standout freshman at Mexico High School, is eyed as a potential record holder in the two mile or 800 yard run. Coach Whitaker praises his unlimited potential as Marley leads the Bulldogs to conference and district titles, breaking records including a 12 46 time. The junior varsity opens at 6 30 before key games versus Hickman and Waynesville.
The boys begin practice Monday while the girls start Tuesday February 22 as winter workouts aim to sustain the teams' two year run of conference and district titles. Notable returning athletes listed for the boys include Randy Barnea and Keith Bartels, among others, with a strong girls roster led by Tonya Crockell and Jenean Davis plus many newcomers.
