Tulip tree lore spans circles from Mount Vernon to Chapel Hill
A long article recounts the Tulip tree’s names, uses, and history. Carl Linnaeus named it Tulipifera while Americans called it Yellow Poplar or Canoe Wood. George Washington planted 12 Tulip trees at Mount Vernon, two surviving, one 62 inches in diameter. The species ranges from Lake Erie to Florida and into Missouri. The Davie Poplar anchors UNC Chapel Hill lore. A 10 year old specimen stands at 1221 South Western, near the Harrison home, with winged seed pods lingering into winter.
