Amherst AP report on Solar Habitat 1 at UMass. Engineer Mike Edds and wife live rent free in a 1500 square foot, two bedroom house with triple glazed windows and copper plates heating via windmill and solar collectors. The system cuts heat use to about one quarter of a standard home in early January, with an auxiliary propane system to cover 20 percent. Estimated total cost about $21,000, potentially competitive with electric heat if mass produced.
