Computers Spot Returns For Audits
IRS uses computers in Martinsburg and regional centers to flag returns with patterns likely to yield more tax. Audits vary by income, with 9 percent of returns over 50,000 dollars audited versus 2.2 percent overall for individuals in 1974. A mix of computer screening, random checks, and scientific sampling guides selections, while human review explains exceptions.

Railroad Aid Passes House Committee Amid Freight Embargo Threat
The Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee approved a railroad aid bill totaling 347 million dollars for cash strapped Northeastern and Midwestern lines hours before a 10 day House recess. Penn Central warned it would halt freight shipments by February 18 without immediate funds, with full shutdown possible a week later. The package combines 197 million in direct federal grants and 150 million in loan guarantees, while a separate 100 million payment was approved by an appropriations subcommittee. Senate already approved 276 million. If both houses back the measure, a conference committee will craft a compromise.
