Schlesinger Sees Arms Cost of 148 Billion
Secretary of Defense James R. Schlesinger told Congress the Pentagon budget will rise toward 148 billion by 1980 while inflation and military pay costs are offset. He warned the U S remains the leader of the non Communist world as Soviet spending climbs. General George S. Brown supported the view that the balance is dynamic though the USSR pursues major strategic force upgrades. Brown cautioned that without U S arms initiatives, Soviet gains could outpace U S capability in coming years. Schlesinger also noted aid to South Vietnam could end within 10 to 15 years, to be reassessed as Hanoi may reconsider its stance.
