Ford seeks big energy research boost in 1976 budget
President Ford urged Congress to lift energy research funding in his fiscal 1976 budget while holding civilian spending to a $600 million rise. He proposed a $786 million energy increase, emphasizing solar, geothermal, fossil fuels, and nuclear programs. The plan targets a sixfold rise for solar and geothermal research, a 50 percent rise for fossil fuel research, and a 20 percent rise for nuclear energy, mainly breeder reactor development. The energy push is paired with tax and price-control changes aimed at reducing foreign oil dependence, with funds returned to the public via rebates and benefits. Environment programs would rise 7.1 percent, with $463 million more, offset by small cuts elsewhere.
