World Prepares Revelry To Bring In New Year 1974
World capitals plan New Year celebrations amid inflation and fuel shortages. Times Square will ignite lights briefly. Trafalgar Square hosts the plunge. Honolulu and Paris mark the moment with fireworks and horns. East Berlin restricts fireworks and visitor passes, New Orleans eyes a record Sugar Bowl crowd, Los Angeles enforces a crackdown on drunken driving, and Buenos Aires plans a formal military observance. Chicago festivities include a Pump Room dinner and a Young Socialist Alliance rally as crowds gather at State and Madison Streets to welcome 1974.
