Government studies computer network for daily commodity futures surveillance
Washington AP reports a 146 page Agriculture Department study proposing a computer network to monitor daily commodity futures trades to curb fraud and assess price impacts. The plan, to be phased in over 36 months if funded, could cost $750000 upfront plus $122000 monthly, with dissent from some industry members over privacy and constitutional issues. The plan aims to replace current reporting by traders and will be considered by the yet to be formed Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
