Farmers Rally Protests Pinched By Hope For Higher Prices

Thousands of farmers rallied across 30 states with tractors pickups and go-carts while awaiting whether demonstrations for higher farm prices will influence policy. In Atlanta estimates ranged from five thousand to seventeen thousand. Topeka drew about five thousand. The event was organized by American Agriculture which plans a nationwide farm strike December 14. Secretary Bergland backed the strike but questioned its impact absent near universal participation. He urged balance between farmers consumers and importing nations and warned against government guarantees that raise consumer costs. Parity concepts and a 1910-14 base period framed the debate on fair prices and federal support. In Missouri Mexican Methodist leader Rev J C Montgomery Jr was awarded the 33rd Degree by Scottish Rite leaders in St Louis for public service.
