Senate approves a 10.2 million dollar appropriation returned to the House. Funds largely aid blind, disabled, and aged programs with 444,400 set for a special legislative session. Senate adds 75,000 for Capitol garage maintenance security and snow removal. Garage remains under legislative control after transfer from the Office of Administration.
In over the counter trading Commerce Banc shares rose 16 percent with bids and asks noted. Wetterau advanced 11 percent while other names showed mixed activity. On the NYSE Robbie Brooks gained 13 percent as 1,600 shares moved, while Dresser Industries climbed 44 percent on higher volume and US Gypsum remained steady. The Dow Jones average closed near 598 after a modest rebound, with a 5 to 4 advantage for advances over declines amid light trading.
Cyril A. Swoboda, 28, of Warrenton, appointed by Circuit Judge George P. Adams as deputy juvenile officer for the 12th judicial circuit covering Audrain, Montgomery and Warren Counties. Salary $6300 annually, prorated by counties. Swoboda is a Southeast Missouri State University graduate and former Air Force sergeant. Rodney T. Nebel also announced the promotion of Mrs. Cathie Van Matre to chief deputy juvenile officer effective Jan. 1, succeeding George W. Bolte who resigned to join Campus Crusade for Christ International. Van Matre will oversee girls and travel in Audrain County among other duties. Swoboda will handle cases in Vandalia, Laddonia, Farber, Martinsburg, Wellsville and boys in Mexico.
Washington AP report says the House approved a bill banning destruction of Richard Nixon tapes and overriding a government agreement. By voice vote Tuesday the measure moved to the Senate, which has passed similar but not identical legislation.
In Linneus Missouri voters approved a $50,000 general obligation sewer bond financed by a $1 tax levy and a $155,000 revenue bond, with unofficial tallies of 159-36 and 149-33 respectively. Linneus is the Linn County seat in north central Missouri.

Mrs. Laura L. Flynn, 92, of Wellsville, died early today at Audrain Medical Center after a stay since November 20. Born July 8, 1882, in Warren County, she was married to Joe Flynn in 1906. Surviving: two daughters Ruth Martin and Evelyn Erb. two sons J.R. Flynn and Marvin. nine grandchildren. 10 great grandchildren. a half brother Charles Travis. two half sisters Sue Boone and Sadie Brigham. Funeral services Saturday at Myers Funeral Home, Rev. Clarence Smith to officiate. burial in Wellsville Cemetery. Visitation Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m.
Mrs. W Lee Maggie Mohler 97 long time Audrain County resident died Monday morning in a Nevada rest home. She attended First Baptist Church and married W Lee Mohler in 1903. Funeral 2 pm today Jericho Springs United Methodist Church. Burial Anna Edna Cemetery. Survived by daughter Reva Leonard Jericho Springs and son David L Mohler Nevada and sister Lutie Brasher Jericho Springs.
Mrs Virginia Lazear Surez of Auxvasse died Saturday in Missouri Pacific Hospital after a long illness. She worked 40 years for Missouri Pacific Railroad as an accountant before retirement. Funeral services were held at Kriegshauser South and burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery. She is survived by husband James Surez, a stepdaughter, four grandchildren, and one sister Mrs George Warner. Parents J W and Sally Gray Lazear and a brother Barney preceded her in death.
Mrs. Musgrove Edward Musgrove were held today at the Precht-Pickering Funeral Home with Don Wort man officiating. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery. Mrs. Ruth Koen was the organist, Pallbearers were Tom Kakac, Thomas Thompson, John Jesse, Charles Hooke, Robert Stites and W. T. Butchinson.
Funeral services for Lawrence Hempstead 69 of Paris are set for 2 p.m. Friday at Agnew Funeral Home with Rev. Ivan Donaldson of Mexico officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery. He died of a heart attack Monday at Kennedy Airport while preparing to board a plane for a Holy Lands tour.
Mrs McCabe and Ralph McCabe will be at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia at 2 p.m. Thursday for services. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p.m. tonight with White Shrine services at 8 p.m. tonight.
Samuel E. and Mary L. Lehman sue Western Fire Insurance Co and Avco Financial Services in Audrain County Circuit Court for 20,259 damages after a Martinsburg fire on August 27. They allege an insurance policy dated April 24 covered a walk in freezer five ice makers a block maker and a freezer ice maker totaling 15,690 with additional 1,569 for denial of payment and 3,000 for attorney fees. The Lehmans are represented by Van Matre and Van Matre.
James M. Douglas, chief justice of the Missouri Supreme Court from 1943 to 1945, died at his Clayton home at age 78. Appointed in 1937 by Gov. Lloyd C. Stark, he overcame a 1933 primary backed by political boss Thomas Pendergast and remained on the court until his 1949 resignation to return to private practice.
In Kansas City a federal judge dismissed a charge against Roy Williams, a Teamsters Union official, after the government indicated it no longer wished to continue with the prosecution.
The Federal Power Commission raised the interstate natural gas base rate to 50 cents per thousand cubic feet from 42, with a 1 cent annual escalation. The change, tied to wells started since 1973, will raise costs gradually and unevenly by area, with 1978 projections showing double-digit increases in Washington DC Boston Chicago and Los Angeles.
Former firefighter and deputy sheriff Strode Edwards suffered a heart attack yesterday at work and is improving at Audrain Medical Center. An ambulance en route to the hospital was in a crash on Jackson Street but continued to the ER. Edwards, who collapsed at the jail, received resuscitation from Sheriff Riley and Deputy Cline. he remained in intensive care with limited visitors.
New Orleans AP Dick Allen declined to join the Atlanta Braves at baseball's winter meetings. Atlanta announced the decision by telegram a day after acquiring him from the Chicago White Sox for $5,000 plus a player to be named later. The White Sox keep the cash if Allen stays away.
Democratic leaders pressed to place broad economic proposals at the top of the Kansas City miniconvention agenda opening Friday. Chairman Robert S. Strauss defended reforms as intraparty debates loom, while New Members push for major committee slots and bill sponsorship as they form the class of 74.
Laurance Rockefeller testified before the House Judiciary Committee that the Rockefeller family is not a united economic unit that would profit from Nelson Rockefeller’s high office. He said the family would gain with the nation, but no one would receive special benefits, and there is no central family plan. The hearings also covered earlier testimony on wiretap knowledge and financing of a Goldberg book for Nelson’s gubernatorial campaign.
